Introduction

The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) in Pakistan was established in 2009 as part of the National Action Plan to combat terrorism and extremism in the country. The department was created with the objective of preventing, investigating, and countering terrorist activities across the country.

The CTD operates under the supervision of the provincial police departments in all four provinces of Pakistan, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Islamabad Capital Territory. It works in close coordination with other law enforcement agencies and intelligence agencies, both within Pakistan and internationally, to effectively combat terrorism and extremism.

The department is equipped with modern technology and trained personnel, including specialized units such as the Bomb Disposal Squad, Crisis Response Team, and Special Operations Group, to carry out its mission effectively. It is also responsible for conducting intelligence-based operations against terrorists and extremist organizations, and for taking legal action against those involved in terrorism and extremist activities.

Since its establishment, the CTD has played a vital role in reducing the level of terrorism and extremism in Pakistan. It has carried out numerous successful operations against terrorist organizations, resulting in the arrest and prosecution of many terrorists and the seizure of their weapons and explosives. The department has also conducted awareness campaigns and training programs to sensitize the public about the dangers of terrorism and extremism.
